dab1967 Nothing new. I think the two of us who tried both failed. Doesn't seem to be possible to activate the sub.

stingray16 Any update or success in getting the subwoofer operational?

dennw Hey dab1967, Fortunately headphones are not illegal in TX. They are very light and comfortable and I like the noise cancelling because no matter the system you have in a car it will always be a mix of road noise and music. I also fly alot for business and use them for that as well. As far as being distracted it is no more so than having the music cranked to certain levels in a car anyway. I still believe that there must be a way to activate the subwoofer, why else would they put it in?

dab1967 Thanks dennw for posting again about this. Makes me feel like maybe I didn't actually fail then! haha. I'm a little confused though. You said that you got the Bose headphones instead. Are you talking about wearing them while in the car? Maybe it's the "ex-police officer" in me, but isn't that illegal where you live? I know in IL where I'm from and CA. where I live now, it's not legal to wear headphones like that. I'm just curious. Plus, I'd think it would get tiring having them on your head. Cheers!

dennw Well to make a long story short - I have failed as well. After I explained the situation the service adviser said he consulted exhaustively with his technicians as well as calling corporate service advisors and the consensus was that the computer hook up to reprogram the settings to activate the subwoofer was not possible. I am done trying. I bought a pair of bose QC35II headphones instead of upgrading the speakers in the vehicle. The music is better overall anyway. Ho hum.

dennw Thanks for the update. I'm taking mine today to the dealership for a separate issue. I'll try to see if they give the same response. I'll post when I find out.

dab1967 For anyone who has been watching or asking about an update: I have failed! lol.

So I took my Encore into the dealership for the first service this week. I asked the service advisor if I could speak with the tech about my trunk area speaker being activated. Of course, the advisor just looked at me like I was an alien! A few minutes later, she asked me over to my car with the tech standing there. I explained to him what I was asking to do and gave him the codes for the Bose vs non-bose. He seemed to understand what I was asking, and he explained that several years ago they were able to go into a computer (hooked into the car's system) and actually program some items. He said it is no longer possible and that he could not change the code in the car's system in order to "wake up" the rear sub-woofer speaker.

So there you have it. I tried and failed. But I can still honestly say that the SoumaTrix speakers I have in my car along with the two front tweeters has given me fantastic sound. I know it's better than the Bose system, even without the sub active. Thanks and if anyone can come up with a good way to activate that speaker, please share.

dab1967 For me? No update yet. Problem is that living in Los Angeles area, going into a dealership isn't as easy as it was when I lived in Northern Illinois. I have not been in for my first oil change yet, but soon I will. When I go in for that, I intend to "ask" the service advisors if I can "speak" with a Buick tech. It is my hope that I can speak with a tech, tell them my story (along with the radio codes, etc) and that they will be willing to hook my car up to the computer. If they will do that, then I hope to have my "Bose subwoofer" activated.

Once I get to that point, I will gladly post again to update. If anyone else finds a way to activate or "wake-up" the sub, please share.

Dan.

dab1967 Update from yesterday: I'm hoping this may help others who would like to do the same as I am trying to do. I've been doing a lot of online searching and calls to the Buick store I worked at a few years ago. Here is what I am finding.

1. Bose system vs. non-Bose. I have the non-Bose system and wanted much better sound. Had I been able to get the Bose without going way up on packages (thus costs), I would have. Let's just say the factory speakers in my car were not very good. Although I'm not a huge Bose fan, it would have been much more satisfactory.
2. Here is what's different between the two systems (confirmed by the dealer service manager I used to work with): The 4 door speakers! Yes, that is the only difference between the two systems (at lease for my 2018 and the 2017).
3. The head unit, the two pillar tweeters, the amp and the tire-well subwoofer are the exact same between the Bose/non-Bose.
4. Bose code for radio is UQA and non-Bose is UQG. I've confirmed that the GM part numbers are the same on both for the subwoofer and amp. Unable to locate part numbers for head unit at this time.

Here is what I've done on my car thus far: I found a great plug n play (high quality) speakers from a company called Sound Matrix. The speakers are called Soumatrix Inspirit (for Opels and Chevrolet and Buick brands). There are also Extase (spelling??) but only seem to be for VW brand. I purchased the Soumatrix Inspirit speakers for all 4 doors of my car. Once shipped (purchased through Amazon), I installed them myself by removing the door panels. That was the worst part of it all! Once the door panels were removed, it was just one screw securing the speaker. Remove, unplug, plug in the Soumatrix speaker, replace in the door and put the screw in. All 4 doors were done (by me only) in about an hour. Well worth the money and time I spent. But now, about that Bose subwoofer in the spare tire well......

Doing more research, I know my car has the ANC (active noise cancellation) system and I personally WANT to keep that. I love a quiet car. However, it seems that the "subwoofer" in my spare is only being used for the ANC system and not for sound (as in music). That is my final goal: To activate my subwoofer! I'm hoping it will give me just a little more bass, thus allowing the Soumatrix speakers to handle the mids/highs better. Of course, any place I call wants to just sell me a bigger sub for the back which is not what I want.

To end, I'm at the point where the Buick service manager I know told me that (as far as he can figure) all I need to do is find a Buick technician who is willing to hook up the computer to my car. Once there, he said there is a setting menu and then a program menu. Once there, they should be able to check the box for the Bose system (UQA) instead of the other (UQG). By doing this, I should have my subwoofer activated! If I can get this done, I will post again for an update. BTW, I'm still using my factory 1" tweeters in the front pillars with my Soumatrix speakers and it sound fantastic. Although Sound Matrix suggests disconnecting them, I did my own thing and kept them on and glad I did.
